Grand Cayman


The first European sighting of the Cayman Islands was by Christopher Columbus in 1503. He named them Las Tortugas after the islands numerous sea turtles. Sir Frances Drake, the first English visitor, named the islands Caiman after the Neo-Taino nations' word for alligator.

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory. These islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are just 480 miles south of Miami. Grand Cayman is the largest of the three islands at about 76 sq miles.


The Cayman Islands are a great destination for families and couples. Grand Cayman has the famous 7 Mile Beach was is calm and perfect for children. Snorkelers and scuba divers can even swim to excellent reefs right from shore or do a day excursion by boat. Another popular activity is swimming with the Stingrays at Stingray City. Other activities include fishing and sailing as well as a visit to the Turtle Farm. Grand Cayman also has a variety of restaurants serving local and international foods.

Grand Cayman also has several festivals. Batabano (Carnival) is held in April and just after Easter. This celebration includes parades with colorful costumes as well as music and dancing. Cayfest is held in April and offers exhibitions of history, culture and art. There are fishing tournaments in Aptil and June. The Taste of Cayman offers a way to sample many restaurants in one night and is held in July. Pirates Week is in October and offers a competition, heritage days and dances.

Entry requirements

All U.S. citizens traveling by air between the United States and the Caribbean, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and Bermuda, will be required to present a valid passport.


English is the official language.


The Cayman Islands have their own currency called the Cayman Dollar (CI$). This dollar has a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar. CI$1.00 equals US$1.25 or, the US dollar equals CI $.80. US and Cayman Dollars are accepted throughout the islands. Most major credit cards are also accepted and ATM’s are available.

Daily temperatures run between upper 70’s and mid 80’s (Fahrenheit). Rainy season is May to October and dry season is November to April. Most rain is in the form of an afternoon shower. Hurricane season runs from July to November.

Getting There

The Cayman Islands are only a 70 minute flight from Miami. The main airport is Owen Roberts (GCM) and located on Grand Cayman. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have inter-island flights.

There are more many weekly flights into the Cayman Islands including 28 flights each week between Miami and Grand Cayman with connections to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. American Airlines and Cayman Airways fly direct from Miami.

Inter-island service between Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman is provided by Cayman Airways and Cayman Express. Cayman Airways provides daily jet service to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, while Cayman Express provides service four times daily to both islands from Grand Cayman.
